 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce lundi, les Vancouver Whitecaps.Un peu d'histoire L'histoire des Whitecaps est marquée par l'instabilité des championnats professionnels en Amérique du Nord. Les Whitecaps ont été fondés en décembre 1973, et participèrent entre 1974 et 1984 à la NASL, gagnant même le championnat en 1979. L'équipe fut dissoute en 1984 lorsque la NASL cessa d'exister, mais connut une rapide renaissance dès 1986, année de fondation des Vancouver 86ers. Cette équipe participa au championnat canadien jusqu'à sa mort en 1992, date à partir de laquelle l'équipe fut admise dans la A-League, à l'époque l'équivalent de l'USL actuelle. Les 86ers devinrent en 2001 les Whitecaps et participèrent jusqu'en 2009 à l'USL, et prirent part en 2010 à la saison inaugurale de la NASL, la deuxième division parallèle à l'USL. Les Whitecaps furent choisis pour participer à la MLS en 2011 et deviendront le week-end prochain le 17e club à prendre part au championnat. Le stade L'enceinte historique des 86ers et des Whitecaps est l'Empire Field (27 500 places), stade dans lequel les Whitecaps commenceront leur saison et se produiront jusqu'à la fin octobre. En effet, ces derniers attendent avec impatience la fin des travaux de rénovation du toit rétractable du BC Place Stadium, écrin dont la capacité est modulable (20 000 places prévues en version soccer, jusqu'à 54 500 pour les matches du championnat canadien de football américain) et permettra aux dirigeants d'accommoder la forte demande populaire autour des matches des Caps. Le stade est la propriété de PavCo, agence opératrice dirigée par le gouvernement fédéral canadien. Les Caps partageront le synthétique de BC Place avec les BC Lions de la CFL (Canadian Football League). Les grands joueurs Beaucoup de joueurs du Royaume-Uni ont évolué aux Whitecaps version NASL, mais le joueur le plus connu de la période restera le Néerlandais Ruud Krol qui participa à la saison 1980 avec les Caps. De la deuxième version des Caps après 1987, on retiendra la présence de Bruce Grobelaar, le fantasque gardien zimbabwéen de Liverpool accusé de corruption, et de Lutz Pfannenstiel, fameux gardien globe-trotter au long cours qui joua pour non moins de 25 clubs au cours de sa carrière. L'équipe des Caps actuelle compte parmi ses rangs Jay DeMerit, titulaire au sein de la défense centrale de l'équipe nationale américaine au cours de la Coupe du Monde 2010. Le palmarès Les premiers Whitecaps ont remporté la NASL en 1979 mais ne connurent pas d'autres succès pendant leurs dix ans passés dans le championnat. Leurs successeurs ont remporté à quatre reprises (1988-1991) le championnat canadien et à deux reprises (2006 et 2008) le championnat USL. Bon à savoir... Le meneur canadien des Phoenix Suns (NBA), Steve Nash, est propriétaire minoritaire des Vancouver Whitecaps. Sa passion pour le foot (il est supporter des Spurs) et son amitié avec Thierry Henry sont bien connues des fans de sport nord-américain. Eric Hassli, qui a évolué à Metz et à Valenciennes, est le premier "Designated Player" de l'histoire des Caps. Il évoluera aux côtés des Suisses Alain Rochat, éphémère arrière gauche de Rennes et Davide Chiumento, qui passa une saison au Mans.
