 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce vendredi, les Seattle Sounders.Un peu d’histoire En 2009, Seattle est devenu la 15e franchise de MLS. La fin de quinze longues années d’attente du côté de Rain City pour obtenir une place dans le championnat américain. Recalé par la Ligue depuis 1994, faute de stade dédié aux soccer et d’investisseurs crédibles, Seattle a finalement été accepté en 2007. L’année suivante, un sondage a été lancé pour choisir le nom de la franchise entre Seattle FC, Seattle Republic et Seattle Alliance. Aucun de ces noms n’a été retenu par les fans, qui ont fait circuler une pétition pour conserver le nom des Sounders, porté par l’ancienne équipe de NASL et d’USL 1st division. L’actionnaire majoritaire est le producteur Joe Roth, accompagné d’Adrian Hanauer (ex-propriétaire du club en USL), Paul Allen (co-fondateur de Microsoft et proprio des Seattle Seahawks - NFL - et Portland Trail Blazers - NBA) et l’acteur Drew Carey. Le stade Les Sounders évoluent au magnifique Qwest Field, écrin de 35 000 places (dont la capacité peut être portée au double) qui affiche toujours complet. Inauguré en 2002, ce stade est partagé avec les Seattle Seahawks, pensionnaire de NFL. Emerald City Supporters, SoCal Sound, Gorilla FC, North End Faithful et Immortal Fury sont les cinq groupes de fans reconnus et indépendants des Sounders, réputés pour avoir le public le plus fidèle et fervent de tout le pays. Cette saison, Qwest Field sera aussi le théâtre de derbys bouillants entre Seattle et son rival éternel de Portland. Les grands joueurs En deux saisons, aucun joueur n’a encore marqué véritablement l’histoire des Sounders, même si le Frenchy Sébastien Le Toux (2007-2009) et le Suédois Freddie Ljungberg (2009-2010) ont contribué à faire connaître le club. Les actuels Kasey Keller, Steve Zakuani et Fredy Montero pourraient bien inscrire rapidement leur nom au "Hall of Fame" de Seattle. L’ancêtre de NASL du même nom (1974-1983), lui, a vu passer quelques noms bien connus du grand public que sont les Anglais Harry Redknapp (1976-1979), actuel coach de Tottenham, Geoff Hurst (1976) et Bobby Moore (1978). Le palmarès Comme le Chicago Fire, les Seattle Sounders ont remporté l’US Open Cup dès leur première saison en MLS. Plus fort encore, la troupe de Sigi Schmid est parvenue à conserver son titre la saison passée, glanant un deuxième trophée en autant d’année d’existance ! Seattle figure d'ailleurs parmi les favoris au titre de champion cette saison. A noter aussi la victoire des Sounders aux dépens des Colorado Rapids lors du Community Shield de pré-saison. Bon à savoir Le sponsor maillot du club est XBox, résultat du partenariat avec Microsoft qui rapporte 20 millions de dollars aux Sounders sur cinq ans. Seattle est, avec Los Angeles et Toronto, l’une des trois franchises rentables de MLS, notamment grâce à sa billetterie qui tourne à plein régime. Le seul hic est peut-être de ne pas avoir retenu Seb Le Toux. J'avais été très surpris par cette décision en raison de ce qu'il avait fait pour l'équipe en USL et qu'il avait été le tout premier joueur signé par Seattle version MLS. J'avais trouvé que c'était un signe assez fort de l'attachement du club pour le joueur à cette époque. Mais, bon, je ne pense pas que les Sounders s'en mordent vraiment les doigts vu leurs résultats.
Si je peux me permettre, l'article oublie de mentionner un détail important de la structure du club : Les supporters peuvent élire le manager général. Le premier vote doit avoir lieu l'année prochaine je crois. Clairement un club atypique.
Je pense que Seattle devrait finir facilement dans les 3 premiers à l'Ouest. Donc playoffs pour la 3e fois d'affilée. Et avec l'arrivée de Portland et Vancouver, l'année s'annonce riche en évènements pour les Sounders.
