 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat. Ce lundi, Philadelphie Union.Un peu d’histoire En 2010, Philadelphie Union est devenu la 16e équipe de Major League Soccer. C’est un groupe de supporters, les Sons of Ben, créé en 2007, qui a poussé auprès de la Ligue pour que leur villle obtienne une franchise. Fort du soutien de milliers de fans, le groupe a obtenu gain de cause en février 2008. Keystone Sports and Entertainement est le propriétaire de l’Union, dont le nom vient de l’union des 13 colonies, dont Philadelphie était la capitale. Le stade Le PPL Park de Chester, en Pennsylvanie, est spécialement dédié au soccer. Fort de 18 000 places, l’écrin de l’Union est souvent peuplé aux deux tiers. C'est aussi le territoire privilégié des Sons of Ben, sans qui la franchise de Philly n’aurait certainement pas vu le jour, qui y possèdent leur propre section de 2 000 places. Les grands joueurs Après seulement un an d’existance au sein de la MLS, Philadelphie ne compte pas encore de grands joueurs à proprement parlé. Même si le Français Sébastien Le Toux, révélé à Seattle, est la star de l’équipe. Désormais, l'ancien coéquipier de Yoann Gourcuff et Jimmy Briand au Stade Rennais devra partager la vedette avec les Colombiens Faryd Mondragon, Carlos Valdés et le Guatémaltèque Carlos "El Pescadito" Ruiz, MVP de la saison 2002 avec les Los Angeles Galaxy. A suivre aussi le jeune Congolais Danny Mwanga, nommé pour le titre de meilleur Rookie de l’année la saison passée. Le palmarès Néant, bien évidemment. Quatorzième au classement général de la saison régulière la saison passée, Philly a connu des débuts difficiles, malgré quelques coups d’éclat. Cette saison devrait être plus prolifique pour l’Union, qui pourra s’appuyer sur un groupe qui se connaît depuis un an et qui bénéficiera de son expérience emmagasinée la saison passée. Bon à savoir Depuis janvier 2011, l’Union est sponsorisée par le géant alimentaire Bimbo, pour un revenu de 12 millions d’euros sur quatre ans. Sébastien Le Toux en est d'ailleurs devenu l'égérie. Les couleurs de l'Union, le bleu et l'or, ont été choisies en référence à celles de l’armée continentale lors de la révolution américaine.
