 En attendant le coup d’envoi de la saison 2011 de MLS le 15 mars prochain, MLS News.fr vous présente les 18 franchises du championnat américain. Ce mardi, DC United.Un peu d’histoire Propriété du consortium DC United Holdings, DC United fait partie des dix clubs originels choisis pour former la MLS lors du lancement du nouveau championnat en 1996. L'histoire du foot à Washington est riche, puisque la ville vibra dans le passé pour les Diplomats, qui participèrent à la NASL entre 1974 et 1980, et ont compté dans leurs rangs Guus Hiddink, Thomas Rongen et surtout Johan Cruyff. Le stade DC United évolue depuis 1996 au Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (46 000 places), construit en 1961 pour y accueillir matches de baseball et de football américain. Depuis la construction de nouveaux stades pour les Redskins et enfin pour les Nationals en 2007, DC United est le seul locataire du très vétuste RFK. Le stade est la propriété du Washington Convention and Sports Authority, organe municipal en charge de l'opération des enceintes sportives au sein du District de Colombie. La Barra Brava, les Screaming Eagles, et La Norte sont les trois principaux groupes de supporters des Black and Red. Un projet de nouveau stade est en cours depuis juillet 2007 mais les propriétaires et politiciens locaux n'ont toujours pas trouvé d'accord sur la location exacte du stade. Le projet est au point mort et les perspectives de progrès ne sont pas évidentes ; la proposition la plus sérieuse vient de… Baltimore, à 65 km de Washington, mais a été rejetée par les propriétaires qui tiennent à préserver l'identité du club. Les grands joueurs Le riche palmarès de DC United fut d'abord acquis sous la houlette de Bruce Arena, qui en fut le coach de 1996 à 1998 avant de prendre les rênes de la sélection américaine et aujourd'hui du Los Angeles Galaxy. Le joueur emblématique de DC United est Ben Olsen, milieu de terrain rugueux et combatif, fidèle à son club pendant quasiment toute sa carrière entre 1998 et 2009, et qui en est aujourd'hui l'entraîneur principal. L'autre joueur emblématique est le Bolivien Jaime Moreno (1996-2002, 2004-2010), meilleur buteur de l'histoire de la MLS avec 132 buts. DC United compta aussi dans ses rangs les internationaux américains Jeff Agoos (1996-2000), Tony Sanneh (1996-1998) ou Eddie Pope (1996-2002). Hristo Stoïchkov et Marcello Gallardo firent aussi des passages peu mémorables d'une saison au DC United, respectivement en 2003 et 2008. Enfin comment ne pas citer DC United comme étant le club des débuts – et de la fin, diront les mauvaises langues – du phénomène Freddy Adu, qui joua son premier match en pro sous les couleurs noires et blanches de DCU à l'âge de 14 ans, lors de la saison 2004. Le palmarès DC United domina le championnat lors de ses premières années, empochant trois fois le titre lors des quatre premières saisons d'existence de la MLS. Le club remporta aussi le titre en 2004, devenant ainsi le club le plus titré de la MLS. DC United peut aussi se targuer d'avoir remporté le Supporters Shield (leader du classement général au terme de la saison régulière) à quatre reprises, la Lamar Hunt US Open Cup deux fois et la Ligue des champions de la CONCACAF en 1998, ce qui en fait l'un des clubs les plus importants de l'histoire du football aux Etats-Unis. Bon à savoir... DC United est le seul club américain à avoir participé à une compétition hors de la CONCACAF: le club a pris part à la Copa Sudamericana (l'équivalent de notre Ligue Europa) en 2006. La légende veut qu'une famille de ratons laveurs peuple les couloirs souterrains du RFK Stadium, symbole de la vétusté des installations actuelles de DC United. Les amateurs de Ligue 1 reconnaîtront Branko Boskovic, passé par le PSG et Charlie Davies, au FC Sochaux avant son tragique accident de voiture. A suivre tout particulièrement: Andy Najar, meilleur rookie de la saison 2010 à seulement 17 ans et promis à un grand futur avec la sélection américaine ou hondurienne et sûrement en Europe.
