Un peu d’histoire Fondé en octobre 1997, le Chicago Fire a fait son entrée en Major League Soccer en 1998. Mais pourquoi le Fire ? La franchise de l’Illinois porte ce nom en souvenir du grand feu qui avait ravagé la ville pendant deux jours en 1871. D’ailleurs la date de sa fondation correspond au 126e anniversaire du drame. Le Fire est en quelque sorte l’héritier du Chicago Sting, son prédécesseur en NASL de 1975 à 1984. Le stade Trimballé de stade en stade pendant huit ans, le Fire évolue depuis juin 2006 au Toyota Park de Bridgeview (dans la banlieue de Chicago), écrin de 20 000 places. Celui-ci compte parmi les meilleures affluences de MLS, avec 15 000 spectateurs en moyenne, dont une très forte communauté d’Europe de l’Est (Pologne, République tchèque) ou d’Amérique latine (Mexique). A ce jour, le seul titre de champion du Fire, qui se rattrape en étant le recordman de victoires en Open Cup (la Coupe nationale). Couronné en 2000, 2003 et 2006, Chicago est le plus décoré des clubs de MLS. Mais depuis 2006, la "Red Army" n’a plus rien gagné. Pire, elle a loupé les playoffs pour la deuxième fois de son histoire seulement la saison passée. Bon à savoir... Le Chicago Fire a dû attendre janvier 2008 pour arborer son premier sponsor maillot, Best Buy. Notre consultant Pascal Bedrossian a évolué un an sous les couleurs du Fire (2006-2007). L’international malien de Boulogne-sur-Mer, Bakary Soumaré, a lui aussi fait ses classes dans l’Illinois (2007-2009).
